Oh, my dear. *sigh* I wish I had words of wisdom, but all I have is my own experience to answer your questions.
1.) yes. Difficult but worth it.
2.) No. Not a romp at all, really. Being married may be the most life-challengingly difficult thing I've ever done. My mom used to tell my sister "being married for a long time is easy, you just don't leave. Having a good marriage is the hard part."
3.) It doesn't have to crush you. Dan and I hurt each other more often than I like to admit, but we keep going to God, getting advice from people we trust, and then going back and trying again.
There have been times when I had this exact same fear, that the marriage was going to crush me. But it hasn't yet, and I believe that's the grace of God.
